I am drawn to textures and rich hues, creating layered images and objects through collage, printmaking, photography, and bookmaking. Inspired by the natural world and themes of migration, my work explores the idea of place and how we search for and create a sense of home in our lives and relationships.
Kirsten Elling is an Ann Arbor townie as well as a U-M Alumna. She is a psychologist by day and has always loved to make things, immersing herself in the creative process whenever she is not working or spending time with her family. Interwoven throughout her BA in Psychology and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology has been extensive coursework in photography (University of Michigan, Prague House of Photography), printmaking (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) and letterpress (Columbia College Chicago). Utilizing bookmaking and collage techniques are a natural way of weaving these threads together.
